Yesterday, it poured heavily in Pune (where I live). It was so gloomy that I craved the beach & sun. I thought of Goa!

I looked at some hotel prices in December and realized I couldn’t afford most of them. To understand pricing, I wanted to check how many people travel to Goa throughout the year. This led me down a rabbit hole of data exploration. I got my hands on [domestic air traffic data]((https://www.dgca.gov.in/digigov-portal/?page=259/4184/servicename) for 2019 - 2024. Here are the numbers:

• 2019 - 39,66,108
• 2020 - 14,51,411
• 2021 - 25,55,199
• 2022 - 37,05,882
• 2023 - 53,54,042
• 2024 - 27,60,228 (till Jun-2024)

2020, 2021 were COVID-19 years, this is reflected in the numbers.

The 2023 spike is the result of a new airport that opened in December 2022.

Where do most of these people fly from?

What are your guesses?

• Mumbai and Delhi are the top 2 cities from where people fly to Goa.
• Mumbai and Delhi make up 50% of air traffic to Goa.
• In 2023, other cities increased their share to over 50%, but Mumbai and Delhi still hold the lead.
• Interestingly, people flew from Delhi to Goa even during the first COVID-19 wave in 2020.
• Bangalore and Hyderabad are 3rd and 4th.

What surprised you the most about the top cities flying to Goa?
